“Last fall I needed extra money.  I had surgery about 10 months ago.  Even though I had disability pay from work, the bills were coming in and I decided to try selling some items (jewelry and silverware).  I checked on gold parties, jewelry stores and a variety of web sites that advertised buying precious metals.  I decided on Silver and Gold Exchange for several reasons.

1)  I talked to a real person when I called.  This person was courteous & helpful without being pushy.  I ended up talking to different employees during all the calls I made.  They were as nice as possible and my questions (which were probably silly since I had never done this before) were answered politely.  I was told to feel free to call any time I had a question or a comment.  I was never made to feel that I was wasting anyone’s time.

2)  The price chart was current, easy to find, & had weights that I could understand.  I understood grams and had a food scale at home that showed this measurement.  I could check and see what my items were worth.  That meant a lot to me!  I knew how much money I needed and could sell just what would pay the bill.  Other websites only seemed to give “pennyweight and troy ounce” measurements.  They explained how to use those measurements, but it all seemed rather confusing.

3)  I found that I got a better price from Silver and Gold Exchange.  That seemed strange since the gold and silver prices should have been the same (I thought).  I compared what several jewelry stores would give me with Silver and Gold Exchange’s chart and you always had the better price.

4)  The turn around time was very quick.   I sent my package off on late Thursday and got a check, most of the time, on Monday.  Very Fast!

5)  I always felt you really appreciated my business and didn’t treat me as just a number.  I remember calling about a very nice necklace I had to sell.  I called to make sure it had been received ok.  I must have talked 5 or 10 minutes to the person working with it.  It made me feel better.

“I had some jewelry, serving pieces, silverware and a few very odd pieces of silver I was no longer interested in keeping and decided to sell them.

I visited a few companies that showed up locally at nearby hotels. They splashed a large advertisement in the newspaper and followed up with various radio spots to attract customers. I brought them my items for a “no commit” estimate of value. I asked some questions about how the materials would be evaluated and subsequently priced. I received an answer in units of weight I could not verify and they were very mysterious about the rate they would be willing to pay. I was not comfortable with the weight issue and was less comfortable with the pricing scenario. The biggest issue was that of the “odd” pieces. They were rather large, beyond the capacity of their tiny little scale, so the man made me an offer based on the maximum capacity of the scale! Add insult to injury, neither of us had a clue about the purity, so the fellow graciously offered me a rate based on 80% purity and told me no one would pay any more for it! While other people visiting the same hotel were excited that someone would actually buy their items, I was convinced that my items were worth more than they offered, which incidentally was a handwritten note on plain blank paper, containing only the dollar amount offered, then folded in half and handed to me for my review. All seemed far too “Hollywood” for me.

I did some web surfing and came up with a number of companies purporting to give the best possible price for precious metals. Once again, after chasing several emails (no phone number was offered), I was not very comfortable about how the items would be valued. I finally came across Silver and Gold Exchange and was very surprised with their “honest and open” approach. The current rate they would offer for the various metals was clearly listed on their website, along with clear instructions for converting the weights to units I could deal with AND helping me very clearly understand the issue of purity and precious metals content.

I was concerned about the “odd” pieces I had so I called their 800 number. Before the end of that day, I received a call back from an individual who was very knowledgeable about many materials and how their company would deal with the “odd” pieces. Further, they paid the freight for me to ship them the items, which went straight to their analysis center. Within a day or so, I received a phone call back with news that some of my items were worth more than I thought, after their testing was completed. None of them were worth any less than I thought. They emailed me a written offer, which I gladly accepted, with an amount substantially higher than the “hotel” guys. I had a choice of how I wanted the payment sent to me and decided a check would suffice. Very quickly it came, as advertised and I was merrily on my way to the bank with it.

I’ve been buying pure gold, silver, and platinum for about 15 years, but until now I’ve never had a desire to sell any.  When it comes to buying pure precious metals it is very hard to find a dealer that will sell them for only 3% over spot.  It’s so hard infact that I only found one, and that was in Alaska.  When it came time to sell I found that the norm was 30-50% below spot.  Now I don’t mind people making money, but 30-50% below spot is robbery.
Now, in this market of wild fluctuations I would expect a slightly higher spread, but come on – 30-50% is nuts.

At first we sent just a handful of our very old silver coins just to give it a shot.  We were told prior to shipping our coins what price we were to be paid for the amount we were sending.  We printed the address label right from the website and took the package to the post office to be shipped.  No more than 5 days later we received our check and it was the exact amount that Mike  said it would be.  We were so relieved and thankful that we chose a reputable company that followed through on their promise to us.  We decided that we would send a second package of coin to sell to Silver and Gold Exchange.  This time we sent about $600 worth of coin and again, in less than a week we received our check for the amount promised.  Silver and Gold Exchange is the only company that we will deal with when it comes to selling our silver coins.  They have proven to us that they believe in being trustworthy and that they are a company based on integrity.  We will continue to use Silver and Gold Exchange and will only recommend to our friends and family that they do the same.
